Pearl – Simon Armitage
Several weeks after making a cultured purchase in Waterstones I have (at last) read this wee book.
I’ll admit to some sort of inner smugness as I spurned action and adventure for poetry.
Isn’t it strange how something as buying a book can become an event for self congratulation?
Action and adventure were cast to one side for a fresh translation of a 14th century classic.
Back home I pondered my purchase. Had I made a dreadful mistake? No amount of reading would conjure up the comforting voice so often heard on 6 Music.
A first scan is enough to award a score of just 2 out of 5.
If Simon were to perform a reading I’m guessing the book would get a 5 out 5.
Book 9 of 2019 – and I quite like my sketch of the cover.
