Alex at South Downs Bikes refers to the climb up to Chanctonbury Ring as Heart Attack Hill.

I’ve only ever gone west to east, and on Saturday went via Washington which includes a bridge over the busy A24.

Much to my surprise I made it all the way up without stopping, apart from the seriously steep “Z” bend just before the gradient fizzles out.

The cloud cover robbed me of the views, and diminished the “awe” I usually feel at this point.

I found it quite amusing that I should tackle this next stretch with a  certain moistness in the air.

My legs needed a rest, and my body needed a boost.  I hopped off my bike and reclined next to a gate with a packet of Beef Jerky.

The grass saturated my clothes, but the chewy snack soon lifted my spirits.
