My latest “good read” was another in the James Herriot series.

“It shouldn’t happen to a vet” is every bit as good as “if only they could talk”, which I finished last week.

Ideally I would have read this one earlier, but each book stands on its own merit, so the fact he’s courting in this one, and married in the other matters not a jot.

There a few great “motoring” incidents in this edition, more than a beers, and a scary amount of driving “under the influence”.

I enjoyed this further insight into the life of a rural vet in 1930’s Britain.  I could identify with the chapter on debt collection.

If you’ve never tried one of these books you’re missing out.  See if you can grab one to tai eon your summer hols.

RATING: 9 out of 10

  1. I remember reading these books, they were very good.

    • There was a TV program a little while back following the vets at the same practice –
which is still in existence (although in a different building). Unfortunately, I can’t remember what it was called.

      • You’re right but I only ever saw about 5 minutes of it. I’d find it more interesting now, we didn’t even have a TV the first 8 years we were married.
