The second book in the Edward Leithen series captured my imagination far more than John Burnet of Barns.

The novel is set post WW1 when the three well off central characters are overcome with ennui.

After being checked out by their doctor Leithen is counselled to go abroad and steal a horse, preferably somewhere that would consider such an occurrence with some gravity.

As one might expect the London based triumvirate end up choosing a series of escapades in Bonnie Scotland.

Each has to tackle an almost impossible task by taking “game” from one of three estates whilst setting out their challenge under the pseudonym of John Macnab.

Buchan’s writing certainly captured my imagination, and I found myself romancing about a more light hearted trip beyond the border.

In the end I thought the novel lost some impetus by the time the third challenge was being described.

Rating – 7 out of 10
