So far in my journey around The Somme we’ve had the Red Baron, the Red Squirrel and now we have The Griffin.  A red dragon on a plinth as a memorial to the 38th Welsh Division at Mametz Wood.

The memorial is actually quite some distance from the village, and even in my car I wondered if I’d missed a turning. Keeping to the indicated route I eventually came to a  dead end, and could look up at the defiant dragon.
