Boom! Lochnagar Crater
Hold on a minute.
This is not one of my finest photos, but it does give an idea of the sheer scale of the explosion which made it.
Despite the fact that it caused carnage amongst the German defence the allies still suffered heavy losses as they sought to take La Boisselle.
Whilst I was at The Somme I read an article which told how the leader of the attack was dumbfounded when it suddenly dawned on him that the devastated village had not one single feature left intact.
It slowly dawned on him that he had reached his objective, whilst at the same time reaching a spot which had been utterly obliterated.
Without the benefit of a hot air balloon, or gigantic ladder I’ll leave you to click on these two sites to get an idea of the massive “Boom” which must have sounded as the hilltop erupted.
Looking at the scene a Bible verse comes to mind….
Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
Somehow my mind swaps “Greater” for “Crater” as I silently narrate this well known passage.
