A few memorials to the 3,873 buried at High Wood, Longueval.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission provide sufficient funds to ensure that these men are not forgotten.

The grave stones show a stark symmetry to a scene where chaos and calamity once reigned.

The Battle of the Somme was fought from 1 Jul 1916 – 18 Nov 1916, but even out of season this remote outpost receives a steady trickle of those who wish to honour them.

Visitors are able to sign a register and make a brief comment at all CWGC sites.  It’s a small thing, but I took the time to sign in.
