After a brief diversion into Arundel I went up the A284, and took a rest at the Whiteway Cafe on the junction with the A29.

It was my first significant climb of the day, reaching 452 feet before dropping down to the roundabout.

Once I’d refuelled with a latte, chips, and a hot dog I had more serious work to do.

Here the bike is shown looking back across part of The South Downs Way. It may look fairly tame, but the chalk and odd lump of flint made even the downhill bits pretty scary.

I half wondered about dropping the tyres pressures as my machine slipped about. I took this picture about half a mile short of Toby’s Stone, near the summit of Bignor Hill.
