Another day off work today, and a chance to catch up with my friend Tom.

We agreed to head west, and if at all possible cycle to Hayling Island and back.

In truth that was tall order with the evenings closing in so early now the clocks have gone back.

As much as I like cycling after dark I really wanted to get back home tonight and see an old friend who’s on a one night stop over back at our place.

So after reaching the tip of Hayling Island (see above) we cycled back to catch a “Southern Train” to Goring.

You know what’s going to happen next don’t you?

Well you would if you lived in the South of England.

Yup, after handing over £22 for us and our bikes to travel six stops we hit a problem.

Tom being part of The Railways Inspectorate spotted it before the official announcement.

“Due to a lack of staff this train will be terminating at Littlehampton”.

Ah well, we had a great 30 minute sprint back to Goring in the dark.

Pity the poor souls who attempt to travel by SOUTHERN trains each day, they take the biscuit for unreliability!

In total we cycled fifty miles today, not bad considering all our stops in our 7 hour window.

  1. Oh how I remember those trains that terminated early. Our eldest daughter is now at Uni on the south coast and she is learning to deal with this!!!

    • She’s probably either learning to be patient, or becoming increasingly exasperated! Pity the others who had jam into other trains like sardines, at least we had our bikes for the next leg. Sleep well.

  2. Hey is that me “another 50.. somethinks!” D’oh!! Hey!! Less of the old…lolllll
