Welcome (for visitors) –          5

Worship (for the Lord) –          4

Word (for the Saints/Lost) –    5

Mission (for the Lost)         –     4

Passion (for the Lord)         –     4

We had a friend with us on Sunday, and she couldn’t wait to worship in English.

So we toddled off to Jubilee Community Church in East Grinstead.

Our eldest son and family are part of the congregation, and we pay the occasional visit so I wasn’t “flying blind” on this particular “Church Watch” visit.

We arrived in good time, and a whole bank of welcomers stood just inside the entrance.

I went on ahead, and the pastor (who will remember us as Joe’s parents) was quick to say hello.

We then had a time of worship, better quality modern stuff, well led by both a bloke (v. good) and a young lady (even better).

As an old timer I confess I prefer ye olden hymns, but that’s my problem!

During the collection some random chap behind me massaged my shoulders, how strange.

My visitor had done just that before we hopped in the car.

Was the Lord trying show me that he cares?

So what of the themes running through the service?

FAMILY was big theme, and the 100 odd souls seemed to be very comfortable with one another.

We then had three short words from three different people.

The latter two spoke to me the most.

Psalm 23 – a very personal look into a few verses that have helped the speaker no end.  There were also references to 1 Samuel 17:37.

And lastly a speaker who asked to imagine Romans 8:28 as if we were driving in a car.

And we know that in all things

God works for the good of those who love him,

who have been called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28 NIV

Where have we put Jesus?  In the boot, in the back, in the passenger seat, or behind the wheel.

These last two speakers were extolling faith even when we’re not in the best of circumstances.

But then if we only have faith through the good times we’re no better than the seed that fell on the path.

  1. I once had a dream that i was riding as a passenger in the front seat of my car. I turned around and noticed my mother in the back seat and then I said to her, “well then, who is driving?” And I looked to my left and Jesus was driving.

I prefer the old hymns also. And I’d like a shoulder massage thrown in too, please. Thank you.

  2. I thought about my dream again, I now recall that I was in the backseat, my mother in the front. At any rate, Jesus was at the wheel!
