I’m enjoying Pilgrim’s Progress as I slowly turn each page meditating upon the Bunyan’s sound allegorical teaching.

Christian and Hopeful have just escaped from Doubting Castle, and the “Giant of Despair”.

Inside Leeds Castle I was reminded of the story, and a short passage from the New Testament;

And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;

I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

Revelation 3:7-8

For those who walk the narrow way theses verses should be an encouragement for any who have but “a little strength”.

For believers who find themselves tormented in dungeons of Doubting Castle I’d also point them to these well known words;

And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Matthew 17:20

Our salvation doesn’t lie in our own strength, or a huge dollop of faith.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

James 1:17
