I’d hoped to see the wider family today, but have a  cold.

Instead I’m reading Pilgrims Progress.

It’s a classic I’ve read before, but now I’m going to revisit the pages and watch The Truth unfold.

The allegory charts the progress of Christian as he seeks to lose his burden en route to the Celestial City.

Having skipped the intro I’m now enjoying the quotes which are frequently personalised verses from scripture.

As Obstinate tries to persuade Christian back the “City of Destruction” the pilgrim retorts,

“No, not I, for I have laid my hand to the plough”.

The Son of God called men to follow him, and in Luke 9 some made their excuses, but Jesus responds

“No man, having put his hand to the plough,

and looking back,

is fit for the kingdom of God”

Luke 9:62

The impact of the scripture may be lost today, but the inference is clear.

Nobody can keep a straight course whilst looking back.

We’re to look forward, focus and seek our destination with due diligence, anything less will see us lose our way.

  1. You’re obviously a lot more mature than I…prefer the children’s version – p’haps you’ll read it to E and T soon!
