Here’s the lobby of the Novotel at Brentford.

It looks like a man’s gone crazy with a whole load of offcuts, but I’m delighted that this hotel chain created such a feature.

Funnily enough I didn’t use this as a cue to witness, but during our evening meal there was quite a debate about a man called “Jesus”.

Western society largely eschews any reference to Christ, but he’s still being talked about 2000 years after exploding onto the world stage.

Today’s subject goes back still further, at around about 6000 years.

It’s recorded in Genesis 3:22

And the LORD God said,

Behold, the man is become as one of us,

to know good and evil: and now,

lest he put forth his hand,

and take also of the tree of life,

and eat, and live for ever:

A metaphorical tree of life is found in Proverbs 15:4

A wholesome tongue is a tree of life:

but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.

The fact that the Tree of Life features in Genesis and Revelation is enough for me.

It isn’t just folklore, but a monument that spans time.

Revelation 22:14

Blessed are they that do his commandments,

that they may have right to the tree of life,

and may enter in through the gates

into the city.

How do we gain that right?

Acknowledge your shortcomings and cry out to The Son (who died on another “tree”)

but was raised to life on the third day.
